8/4/06 - 8/5/06:
This weekend while we were driving the Jeep we noticed a gas smell! So our first project turned out to be dropping the gas can. This was OK because we had planned on doing it sooner or later. The gas gauge was not working so we were going to have to replace the sending unit anyway. We got back to the house and looked at the back end of the Jeep and gas was pouring out! Since we assumed that either the tank was cracked or one of the hoses had busted we dropped the tank. It definatly took some maneuvering to see if the tank was cracked or not. The whole process took us about 4 hours to get it out. After inspection of the tank and and hoses we were unable to find any leaks. We decided that the hoses were leaking when under pressure so I clamped them down with extra force during the re-install. As far as the sending unit being bad we were wrong. The float on the sending unit was catching on the boot inside the tank. The boot had warped over time. Too bad too because I had found a replacement sending unit for $75. The tank is going to end up costing a couple of hundred dollars. The boot can not be removed from the tank or repaired. Unfortunately no one had a used tank in stock so we tightened everything back up and reinstalled the tank. And we thought it was hard to remove the tank!!!!!! At least it's not leaking anymore.
